Helldivers 2 Eruptor — Stats, Unlock and 2026 Guide

The R-36 Eruptor is a bolt-action explosive rifle that deals 230 direct damage plus 225 explosion damage per shot, with heavy armor penetration on the projectile — and it is one of the most versatile primaries in the game in 2026. It unlocks on page 2 of the Democratic Detonation Warbond for 60 Medals, and its defining trait is demolition: one well-placed shot closes bug holes, blows up Automaton Fabricators and even cracks grounded Illuminate Warp Ships. That combination of heavy penetration and structure damage is why current tier lists rank it S-tier against Automatons and A-tier everywhere else.

This guide covers everything: the exact stats, how to unlock it (and how long the grind actually takes), why it's good against each faction, what to pair it with, and the mistakes that make it feel weak.

The Eruptor's Stats, Explained

The Eruptor fires jet-assisted shells that explode into shrapnel on impact — a "grenade sniper rifle." The numbers, cross-checked against the Helldivers Wiki and the community's explosive-weapon testing:

Stat Value
Damage (impact) 230 ballistic
Damage (explosion) 225
Shrapnel damage 110 per pellet, 30 pellets
Armor penetration Heavy (projectile) / Medium (explosion)
Fire rate 32 RPM (bolt-action)
Magazine / spare 5 rounds / 6 spare mags (35 total)
Ergonomics 25 (very low — drags when aiming)
Demolition Force 30 (projectile) / 20 (explosion)
Unlock Democratic Detonation Warbond, page 2, 60 Medals

Two numbers do the real work here. Armor penetration: Heavy puts it in a club that almost no other primary belongs to — the official wiki notes most primaries can't touch heavy armor at all, and the Eruptor punches through it while also delivering AoE splash and 30 shrapnel pellets. Demolition Force 30 is the stat that decides whether a weapon can destroy structures — it's the same demolition class as anti-tank support weapons, which is why one shot closes a bug hole even when you hit it from the side.

Per the official Helldivers Wiki — R-36 Eruptor, the Eruptor's current in-game stats are 230 impact damage, 225 explosion damage, heavy armor penetration and Demolition Force 30, with a 5-round magazine and 32 RPM fire rate.

How to Unlock the Eruptor (and How Long It Takes)

The Eruptor lives in the Democratic Detonation premium Warbond:

  1. Buy the Warbond — 1,000 Super Credits. You can earn those by farming credits in missions (see our Super Credits guide for the fast route) or buy them outright.
  2. Spend Medals on page 1 — Warbond pages unlock by spending Medals on the previous page, so you'll need to clear part of page 1 first.
  3. Buy the Eruptor on page 2 — 60 Medals. Medals come from missions, Daily Personal Orders and Major Order rewards.

Total cost: 1,000 Super Credits for the Warbond + about 60–70 Medals. Old guides from 2024 sometimes quote 120 Medals — that was the launch-era price before an early economy pass; the current price per the wiki is 60.

Skip the grind if you're credit-poor

Super Credits are the only paywall. If you don't want to pay, run Trivial-difficulty loot missions for a few evenings — the super credit farm nets roughly 500 credits an hour with zero spending, which pays for the whole Warbond in about two hours of looting.

Why the Eruptor Is Strong in the 2026 Meta

The Eruptor had a turbulent history: it shipped in April 2024 as one of the most overpowered primaries in the game, got nerfed hard within weeks, then was gradually restored through the 2025 balance passes. In the post-Update 6.3 meta it sits at S-tier vs Automatons and A-tier vs Terminids and Illuminate on both major tier lists — the same ranking our best weapons guide gives it (S vs bots, A elsewhere).

What it does well, faction by faction:

  • Terminids (bugs): the one-shot bug-hole closer. The exploding shrapnel lets you close nests from an angle — no need for a perfect line — and 1–2 shots kill Brood Commanders, Bile Spewers and Hive Guards. Kotaku's launch review called it "your new best friend for clearing bug holes," and that's still its best job in 2026.
  • Automatons (bots): the precision siege weapon. Heavy penetration dents Devastators and Hulk chassis from range, and it deletes Fabricators and Broadcast Towers without getting close. This is its best faction — bot armor means nothing to it.
  • Illuminate (squids): medium armor on Overseers is bypassed by the explosive component, and it can crack grounded Warp Ships. The slow fire rate is a real liability against Voteless swarms, though.

The two things that hold it back: slow bolt cycling (32 RPM means every shot must count) and 35 rounds total with no way to top up beyond resupply. Miss shots and you're out of the fight.

Never fire it at close range

The explosion radius is 4m inner / 7m outer, and the shrapnel doesn't check team colors. Firing at a bug that's already in melee range kills you and your squadmates. The Eruptor is a mid-to-long-range weapon; anything inside ~10m should be handled by your secondary or support weapon.

Best Loadouts to Pair With the Eruptor

Because the Eruptor is useless up close and ammo-hungry at range, your loadout has to cover both gaps:

  • Cover the swarm: the M-105 Stalwart or FLAM-40 Flamethrower as support handles the close-quarters chaff the Eruptor can't. Community build guides consistently pair one of these with it.
  • Arc Thrower combo: the ARC-3 Arc Thrower (infinite ammo, chain lightning, no reload) is the current favorite pairing — fry approaching swarms, switch to the Eruptor for priority targets.
  • Secondaries: the P-113 Verdict or P-4 Senator for quick single-target work while reloading. The GP-31 Grenade Pistol is redundant with the Eruptor's demolition ability, so skip it.
  • Armor passive: Med-Kit or Engineering Kit are the standard picks (see the best armor guide for why).
  • Anti-tank stratagem: the Eruptor softens heavies but won't one-shot Bile Titans or Factory Striders — bring a Recoilless, EAT or Railgun for the big stuff. The Recoilless Rifle guide covers the best anti-tank pairing.

One technique worth learning: bolt-cancel. Open the stratagem menu (CTRL on PC) immediately after firing to cancel the bolt animation, which meaningfully increases your fire rate — a trick documented in Game Rant's Eruptor build guide and widely used in the community.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Eruptor good in Helldivers 2 in 2026?

Yes — S-tier vs Automatons, A-tier vs Terminids and Illuminate after the 2026 balance patches. It's the only primary with heavy armor penetration plus Demolition Force 30, which lets it close bug holes and destroy fabricators single-handedly.

How do you unlock the Eruptor in Helldivers 2?

Buy the Democratic Detonation Warbond for 1,000 Super Credits, then spend 60 Medals on page 2. You need to unlock part of page 1 first because Warbond pages unlock sequentially.

Can the Eruptor destroy bug holes and fabricators?

Yes. Its Demolition Force 30 allows it to destroy Terminid bug holes, Automaton Fabricators and similar structures — and the shrapnel AoE means you don't need a perfect direct hit, unlike most weapons.

What is the best loadout to pair with the Eruptor?

The ARC-3 Arc Thrower or Stalwart for swarm control, a Med-Kit or Engineering Kit armor passive, P-113 Verdict or P-4 Senator secondary, and a dedicated anti-tank stratagem like the Recoilless Rifle for heavies.

Why does the Eruptor sometimes feel weak?

Usually one of three mistakes: firing at close range (self-damage), wasting the 35-round ammo pool on lone light enemies, or trying to use it as a DPS weapon — it's a precision/objective tool, not a room-clearer. Practice the bolt-cancel trick and keep a swarm weapon equipped.
