Darkest Dungeon Items & Journal Guide — Laudanum, Curios, and Lore Collectibles
Darkest Dungeon's items and collectibles explained: what Laudanum does, how curios and provisions work, the Iron Maiden curio, the Journal Pages and lore collectibles, and how to use items correctly.
Darkest Dungeon Items & Journal Guide — Laudanum, Curios, and Lore Collectibles
The short version: Items in Darkest Dungeon split into provisions (things you buy before a run: food, torches, shovels, and specific-use items) and curio interactions (using the right item on an interactable object for big rewards). Laudanum is a provision that removes Horror (the stress-over-time debuff) and prevents heart-attack chains. The Iron Maiden is a curio. Journal Pages are lore collectibles scattered through the dungeons.
This guide covers the item system and the collectible side.
Provisions vs Curios (The Two Systems)

- Provisions: Bought at the hamlet before a run — food, torches, shovels, medicinal herbs, bandages, antivenom, holy water, laudanum, and more. They're consumed to survive and to interact with curios.
- Curios: Interactable objects in dungeons (altars, bookshelves, iron maidens, corpses, chests). Each curio has item interactions — using the correct provision on it triggers a beneficial effect (loot, buffs); using nothing or the wrong item triggers a trap/negative effect.
Bring the right provisions for the dungeon. Shovels for ruins/weald (grave piles, rubble), medicinal herbs for warrens/weald (mushrooms, webs), holy water for ruins/cove (altars, urns), laudanum for ruins (bookshelves, portraits). Curio knowledge is 50% of Darkest Dungeon's skill.
Laudanum — What It Does
Laudanum is a provision that:
- Removes Horror — the stress-over-time debuff applied by certain enemies (e.g., the Madman) and curios (e.g., portraits, bookshelves).
- Prevents stress spirals: Horror ticks stress every round; removing it stops the bleed-to-100-stress chain that leads to afflictions and heart attacks.
- Also: it's the specific item that interacts with portraits and bookshelves in the Ruins (clean interaction → loot instead of Horror).
When to buy it: Always bring 1-3 for Ruins/Cove runs (bookshelves, portraits, and the enemy Madman all apply Horror). It's cheap and prevents the worst deaths.
The Iron Maiden (Curio)
The Iron Maiden is a curio — the spiked torture device found in the Ruins (and sometimes elsewhere):
- Base interaction (no item): Random negative effect (stress, damage) with a chance of loot.
- Item interaction: Using Medicinal Herbs on it gives a clean result (loot with no penalty).
- Why it's searched: "darkest dungeon iron maiden" / "iron maiden darkest dungeon" — players either mean the curio or the band (the search crossover is real). In-game, it's the curio: herbs are the answer.
Journal Pages — The Lore Collectibles
Journal Pages are lore items found as rare drops/curio rewards during expeditions:
- What they are: Written lore from the ancestor's perspective — they flesh out the game's backstory (the ancestor's history, the heroes, the horrors).
- How they work: Collecting them fills the Journal (the in-game lore menu). They're the game's primary storytelling.
- Where to find them: Random curio rewards, boss drops, and specific dungeon events. There are a set number (25-ish across the game's content, depending on version) — "darkest dungeon journal page" searches are people hunting the full set.
They're lore, not progression — you don't need them to beat the game. But for the lore-driven fan, collecting every page is a satisfying completionist goal.
