The BG 3 builder cheat sheet: point buy, ability scores, multiclassing rules, respec, and the strongest Patch 8 builds like the Swords Bard and Monk.
BG 3 Builder Guide: Plan a Build Like a Pro
A "BG3 builder" is what players call both the planning process and the character itself — and with 12 classes, 58 subclasses (after Patch 8) and full multiclassing, the design space is enormous. The good news: almost everything except race and background can be changed later, so no build is a life sentence. This guide gives you the math that matters (point buy, ability scores, multiclass requirements), the strongest proven builds for the current Patch 8 meta, and the habits that separate a good build from a paperweight.
How Character Building Actually Works
Every character is built on three layers: race (fixed forever), class and subclass (changeable via Withers), and ability scores (changeable via Withers). The two things you must get right on day one are race and your starting ability spread, because everything else can be fixed for 100 gold.
Point buy in one paragraph: you get 27 points to spend on six abilities. Scores cost points on a curve — 8 is free, each step costs more (8→9 is 1 point, 13→14 is 2 points, 14→15 is 2 points, and so on) — and you cannot buy above 15 before racial bonuses. Most builds want their primary ability at 16–17 (15 + racial +2, or 15 + +1 and a feat later), Constitution at 14+ (everyone, no exceptions), and a sensible 10–12 in anything you don't need.
| Ability | Cost to reach | Who needs it at 16+ |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | 27-point curve | Fighters, barbarians, paladins, throwers |
| Dexterity | 27-point curve | Rogues, rangers, monks, anyone using finesse/bows |
| Constitution | 27-point curve | Everyone (hit points + concentration) |
| Intelligence | 27-point curve | Wizards, Eldritch Knights, Arcane Tricksters |
| Wisdom | 27-point curve | Clerics, druids, monks, rangers |
| Charisma | 27-point curve | Bards, sorcerers, warlocks, paladins, the party face |
Start with your main stat at 16 or 17 and Constitution at 14. That single decision carries most new players through Act 1. Optimization past that is real, but it's a 10% gain — the 16/14 floor is the other 90%.
Multiclassing Rules You Must Know
Multiclassing is where BG3 builds get spicy, and it's also where most builds die. The rules:
- Requirement: to multiclass into a class, your character must have at least 13 in that class's primary ability (13 Charisma for bard/sorcerer/warlock/paladin, 13 Dexterity for rogue/ranger, 13 Strength or Dexterity for fighter, etc.). The game checks this silently — pump the stat before you try.
- Cost: multiclassing costs one level of progression in your base class, so you delay Extra Attack, higher spell slots and feats. The sweet spot is almost always a 2-level dip (fighter's Action Surge, paladin's Smite) or a 10/2 or 8/4 split.
- Spellcasting: multiclassed casters share one spell-slot pool (a 10 Bard / 2 Paladin has 10 levels of full caster slots), but you learn spells per class — a Paladin 2 learns only level-1 paladin spells, which is exactly why Smite builds work.
- Feats and ASIs are tied to character level (4/8/12), not class level — you still get them at total levels 4, 8 and 12.
- Explorer difficulty disables multiclassing entirely. If your planned build multiclasses, play Balanced or higher.
The Best Builds in the Patch 8 Meta
These are the community-consensus S-tier builds — the ones that regularly clear Honour Mode. Level splits assume the level-12 cap:
| Build | Split | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Swords Bardadin | Bard 10 / Paladin 2 | Charisma-based Smite machine; full Bard casting, flourishes, Extra Attack at level 8-10; the community's "best build in the game" |
| Tavern Brawler Monk | Open Hand Monk 12 | Tavern Brawler doubles your Strength bonus on attacks; with high Strength and Wisdom you add both to every unarmed hit, 4+ attacks per turn |
| Sharpshooter Dual Crossbows | Swords Bard 10 / Fighter 2 | Action Surge + ranged Slashing Flourish + Sharpshooter = up to 9 shots in one round |
| Fire Sorlock | Draconic Sorcerer + Fiend Warlock | Charisma blaster: Eldritch Blast with Agonizing Blast + twinned/quicken Fireball, spell slots restore on short rest |
| Gloom Assassin | Gloom Stalker Ranger + Assassin Rogue | Opens every fight with an invisible double-attack round, then executes the surprised target |
| Throwzerker | Berserker Barbarian + Tavern Brawler | Enraged Throw with doubled Strength bonuses; kills bosses from range without ever getting hit |
| Battle Master Fighter | Fighter 12 (pure) | The beginner king: simple, tanky, Trip Attack/Precision Attack every turn, zero multiclass complexity |

The most important context: subclass choice matters more than class name. Two bards are barely the same character if one is College of Swords and the other College of Lore. Read subclass descriptions carefully at level 2–3, and don't be afraid to use our respec advice below.
Per the bg3.wiki Classes page, the level cap in Baldur's Gate 3 is 12, and "using Withers' services, the player can change the class of a character, setting them back to level 1 and allowing them to change their ability scores, class(es) and subclass(es)."
Build Planner Tools and Resources
You don't need to memorise the math — the community maintains everything you need:
- PC Gamer's build lists — the best regularly-updated Patch 8 build breakdowns, covering the Swords Bard, Tavern Brawler Monk and Sorcadin in detail (see their multiclass builds guide).
- r/BG3Builds on Reddit — where the meta actually lives; search any class for a dozen tested builds with gear lists.

Respec: The 100-Gold Mercy Mechanic
Find Withers in the Dank Crypt under the Overgrown Ruins (north of the crash beach, early Act 1) and he moves into camp. For 100 gold he will:
- Change your class and subclass, resetting you to level 1 to redistribute
- Change your ability scores, skills, spells and feats
- Resurrect the dead for 200 gold
- Create hirelings (mercenaries) for 100 gold
Respec is unlimited and never gets more expensive, and it fixes every build mistake except race and background. Veterans' first purchase after recruiting Withers is usually respeccing every companion's starting stats, which are spread thinly for flavor — Shadowheart into more Wisdom, Lae'zel into more Strength and Constitution.
If a build feels weak, 90% of the time it's gear, not the class spread — BG3's best items double a build's output. Check the vendor stock and quest rewards in your current act before you respec away a concept you like.
Common Build Mistakes
- Dumping Constitution — every caster dies to concentration loss; every melee dies to HP. It's the one stat with no exceptions.
- Splitting too thin — 6 different classes gives you nothing at level 12 except a jack of no trades. Two classes, maybe three, is the ceiling for serious builds.
- Ignoring the 13 requirement — a build plan that multiclasses into a class you only have 10 in simply fails silently when you level up.
- Copying a build without its gear — Honour-tier builds are tuned around specific Act 2–3 items (Phalar Aluve, the Knife of the Undermountain King, Duellist's Prerogative). Without the items, a build is just a stat spread.
- Forgetting the party — the four-person party matters more than any single build. See the party-building section of our main guide for how the pieces fit.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best build in Baldur's Gate 3?
The consensus S-tier picks for Honour Mode are the Swords Bardadin (Bard 10 / Paladin 2), the Tavern Brawler Open Hand Monk, and the Sharpshooter dual-crossbow Swords Bard (Bard 10 / Fighter 2). All three are Charisma- or Wisdom-adjacent, front-loaded and gear-friendly.
How does multiclassing work in BG3?
You need 13 in the new class's primary ability, you sacrifice progression in your base class, and caster spell slots pool together while learned spells stay per-class. Two-class builds are the norm; three-class builds are for specialists.
Can I change my build after starting?
Yes — Withers, found early in Act 1, respecs any character for 100 gold: class, subclass, abilities, spells and feats, unlimited times. Only race and background are locked.
What ability scores should I start with?
Your main stat at 16–17 (after racial bonuses), Constitution at 14+, and 10–12 in whatever's left. Point buy gives 27 points; you can't start above 15 before racial bonuses.
What is the best beginner-friendly build?
Pure Battle Master Fighter — simple, durable, strong at every level, no multiclassing required. If you want dialogue power too, a College of Swords Bard is the other safe pick, and it transitions into the S-tier Bardadin later.
