Balatro Decks explained: all 15 base decks with effects, the 20 Challenge decks, the Stake difficulty ladder, and which deck to pick at every skill level.
Balatro Decks Guide — All 15 Decks, Unlock Conditions and the Best Deck
Decks are Balatro's "class selection" at the start of every run. There are 15 base decks plus 20 Challenge decks, and each one ships with a unique opening rule that steers how you should play that run. If you searched "balatro decks," you want the full list, the unlock conditions, and a straight answer on what a beginner should pick. This page has all of it.

The Deck System in 30 Seconds
- You pick one of the 15 base decks at run start; it decides your rules for that run (extra discards, extra hands, more money, a reshaped deck…)
- Unlocks run on two tracks: Collection discoveries and win requirements — the further down the list, the harder the ask
- Each deck also climbs the Stake ladder separately (8 tiers) — this is the real completionist grind

The first four unlocks (Blue/Yellow/Green/Black) are all discovery-gated. Fastest way: open Booster Packs aggressively and buy any Joker you haven't seen — the count climbs quickly. The pack-spam habits from our Planet Cards guide double as discovery farming.
Deck Picks From Beginner to Veteran
- Beginner first pick: Yellow Deck — the extra $10 means 2-3 Jokers or a couple of packs before the first blind hits, and that margin is the whole game early. Red Deck's +1 discard is also fine for practice
- Flush runs: Checkered Deck — 26 Spades and 26 Hearts from turn one, so Flushes assemble themselves; pair it with Jupiter Planets for a comically smooth run (see the Planet Cards guide)
- Veterans: Plasma / Erratic — Plasma rewrites scoring logic entirely (balance Chips and Mult, doubled Blinds), and Erratic is a full RNG lottery
- Economy builds: Green Deck — no interest, but leftover hands and discards pay out; a skilled player snowballs the early game with it
+1 Joker slot looks great on paper; -1 hand per round is what it actually costs you, and mid-to-late game hands get brutally tight. Its unlock (100 discoveries) is easy by comparison — unlock it, then park it until you're comfortable managing Joker slots (the slot-management philosophy lives in the Jokers guide).
The Stake Ladder: The Second Unlock Axis
- 8 tiers: White → Red → Green → Black → Blue → Purple → Orange → Gold (balance shifts between tiers are logged in the update history)
- Each deck climbs independently: to Gold-Stake a deck, you must clear the previous 7 tiers on that same deck in order
- 15 decks × 8 stakes = 120 wins for every sticker — the Completionist++ grind, which the community generally clocks at 200-300 hours
- Gold Stake adds: -1 hand, -1 discard per round, and heavily inflated Boss scores
Challenge Decks: Unlock at 5 Wins
- Win with any deck 5 times to unlock the Challenge mode in the New Run menu
- 20 challenges total, each with custom rules, fixed starting Jokers, and a ban list
- Highlights: The Omelette (no blind rewards, no interest, 5 Egg Jokers to start), 15 Minute City (double face cards), Monolith (permanent Eternal Obelisk + Eternal Marble Joker), Medusa (all Stone cards)
- ⚠️ Challenges award no achievements and no unlocks — they're pure practice and flex territory
Unlocking Every Deck, Fast
- Push Collection discoveries to 100 (unlocks the first five)
- Win once with Red → Blue → Yellow → Green → Black (unlocks decks 6-10)
- On any deck, climb Red Stake up through Orange Stake (unlocks 11-15)
- In a hurry? Main menu → Reset Profile → Unlock Everything opens it all at once — but that profile disables achievements, so use it on a throwaway slot.
