Helldivers 2 Factions — All 4 Explained

Helldivers 2 factions explained: Terminids, Automatons and Illuminate weaknesses, Super Earth and the SEAF, and how each faction plays differently.

Helldivers 2 Factions — Terminids, Automatons, Illuminate and Super Earth

Helldivers 2 has four primary factions: the three enemies you fight — Terminids (bugs), Automatons (bots) and the returned Illuminate (squids) — plus the Federation of Super Earth, which includes your Helldivers and the SEAF (Super Earth Armed Forces) that support you in missions. Each enemy faction plays completely differently: bugs swarm and breach, bots shoot back with armored walkers, and the Illuminate spam mind-controlled hordes behind regenerating shields. The official wiki lists exactly these four, with only Super Earth being playable — and the faction you fight determines your entire loadout, which is why the meta changes per front.

This guide maps the full faction picture: what each one is, its roster and weaknesses, how to build against it, and where the SEAF fits into Super Earth's war machine.

Illuminate Squids Shielded units + Voteless hordes Plasma, AoE, shield-break DPS No

Per the official wiki, these are "the four primary factions found in Helldivers 2," with only the Federation of Super Earth being playable — the faction summary the wiki keeps is one of the game's most-read lore pages.

Terminids (Bugs)

The Terminid faction is Super Earth's original enemy: insectoid aliens from the "Terminid Swarm" that attack in overwhelming numbers. Their core mechanic is the Bug Breach — a spawn point that pours enemies out until destroyed — and their roster runs from Hunters and Warriors up to Chargers, Bile Titans, Impalers and the new Hive Lord boss. Their E-710 oil is Super Earth's fuel source, which is the dark joke of the whole war (and the lore hook of the Terminid containment missions).

How to fight them: fire and area damage overperform (the Terminids' full roster and unit-by-unit counters are in the Terminids guide); bring one anti-tank for the heavies — the Bile Titan guide covers the apex unit and the Hive Lord guide covers the boss.

Automatons (Bots)

The Automaton faction is the armed robot menace: ranged, disciplined, and armored. They call dropships in waves, their Devastators and Hulks demand medium/heavy armor penetration, and the Factory Strider is one of the toughest units in the game. Lore-wise, the Automatons were built by the Cyborgs of Cyberstan as their children — the 2026 Machinery of Oppression update brought the Cyborg Legion itself back to the front (see the Cyborgs guide).

How to fight them: precision and penetration — headshots kill Devastators, anti-tank kills the walkers. The complete Automaton loadout guide is the bot-front meta in one page.

Illuminate (Squids)

The Illuminate returned on December 12, 2024 with Omens of Tyranny: an ancient alien civilization that fights with energy shields, teleportation and mind control. Their horde is the Voteless — mind-controlled former citizens, hence the community name "squids" and the game's own sub-faction labels (Mindless Masses, Appropriators, Vote Snatchers per the wiki). Their ships (Warp Ships, and the massive Leviathan) and the shielded Harvester walkers make them the most mechanics-heavy front.

How to fight them: plasma and AoE clear the horde, sustained DPS breaks the shields, anti-tank handles the walkers and ships. The Illuminate loadout guide covers the full squid-front build, and the Leviathan guide covers the warship.

Super Earth and the SEAF

The fourth faction is the one you're on: the Federation of Super Earth, fought for by Helldivers (you) and supported by the SEAF — Super Earth Armed Forces. The SEAF show up in missions as:

  • SEAF Artillery — objective sites where you load and fire artillery shells at enemy positions; a well-aimed SEAF barrage can one-shot heavies.
  • SEAF soldiers — NPC soldiers that occasionally drop in as temporary allies during missions, mostly flavor but occasionally very helpful.
  • The Super Destroyer fleet — the ships (your ship among them) that deliver every stratagem; the fleet's position on the Galactic War map defines which planets you can fight on.

Super Earth is the satirical heart of the game: the propaganda machine, the "managed democracy" framing, and the fact that the war is largely fought for fuel and control. The war itself — the supply lines, liberation percentages and Major Orders — runs on the live map, and it's the reason faction choice is never just about loadouts: the community collectively decides which front gets reinforced next.

Pick one front, master it, then expand

Each faction demands a different loadout (penetration math, elemental damage, anti-tank type). The community's advice for new players: main one faction until its loadout is muscle memory — the difficulty guide explains how spawns scale, and starting on the bug front is the gentlest on-ramp before bracing for bots.
