Destiny 2 Timeline — The Full Story in Order, From the Red War to Monument of Triumph

Destiny 2's main storyline is one ten-year saga: the war between Light and Dark. In playable order it runs Red War → Forsaken → Shadowkeep → Beyond Light → The Witch Queen → Lightfall → The Final Shape → Edge of Fate → Renegades → Monument of Triumph (the endpoint). On June 9, 2026, Monument of Triumph closed the book — not a "true ending" exactly, but a final station: the story stops with each character in their place, and the game stays playable.

What got vaulted

The Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind and parts of Forsaken were "vaulted" (removed from the live game) between 2020 and 2022. New players can't experience the original campaign in full — Bungie's New Light onboarding covers the essentials, and the story is filled in by newer campaigns plus lore books. It remains one of the most controversial designs in Destiny 2's history.

What the Light and Dark Saga Was About (The Final Shape in Full)

The Final Shape (June 4, 2024) capped the ten-year narrative: the Witness's plan was to "freeze the universe into a perfect final shape," and your Guardian enters the Pale Heart inside the Traveler, with a returning Cayde-6 at your side, to finally defeat the Witness. The victory is bittersweet — the Witness dies, but the Traveler's nature and the price of war get redefined. Most veterans treat this as the real ending; everything after is coda.

The 2025-2026 Era (Post-Final Shape)

  • The Edge of Fate (July 15, 2025): nonlinear campaign, new Kepler destination, the controversial Portal UI
  • Ash & Iron (September 9, 2025, free): the Plaguelands return, Maya Sundaresh's thread (feature article)
  • Renegades (December 2, 2025): space-western flavor, the Lawless Frontier, the Equilibrium dungeon
  • Monument of Triumph (June 9, 2026): the final update — Director UI returns, Sparrow racing returns, "small character beats" to close arcs

This era was Bungie's experiment with a "new content model" (two expansions a year plus free major updates); the latest DLC overview has the complete schedule.

How to Catch Up on the Story in 2026

  1. New players: run the New Light onboarding, then play the campaigns after Shadowkeep in order (everything earlier is vaulted).
  2. Read the lore books: each expansion's lore books (in-game collectibles) are the deepest timeline source — the community chronicle on r/DestinyLore and Destinypedia's timeline both maintain full archives.
  3. Character threads: full arcs for the main cast are in the character guide.
  4. Spinoffs: the Rising mobile game runs on a parallel timeline, outside the mainline order (Rising explained).
The efficient catch-up route

In 2026 the backbone is four campaigns: Witch Queen → Final Shape → Edge of Fate → Renegades. Shadowkeep, Beyond Light and Lightfall are optional — after the shutdown they have no "timeliness," so you can play them whenever.
